Under Construction
We landed in Athens about noon, and our tour director was there waiting for us. He took us directly to our hotel. Knowing we'd be tired (long flight from NY), and hungry (airplane food) I had reserved a food tour that started near our hotel. When I turned my phone on at the Athens airport, I received a cancellation from the foodie--she said she wanted to cancel because it was too hot. Athens was in the midst of a heat wave. I was already anxious about being in a foreign capital with 3 teenage grandkids, this seemed like a bad way to start our trip. Despite teenage energy, jet lag was affecting all of them. We finally found some Greek dinner and went to bed early. |
The next day, our first real day in Athens, we headed out for our morning activity: a trikke electric tricycle bike ride through town. It was a fun way to travel--we quickly went across the major parts of Athens to get to the main attractions. The main tourist parts of Athens surround the Acropolis hill and much of it has been turned into pedestrian only areas and on these trikes we were considered pedestrians for some reason. But we would never have covered that much territory just on foot. While planning this trip, I was constantly looking for activities that the grand kids would like, activities that were active, prevented use of cell phones, and would show them as much of Greece and Athens as possible. This was a fun way to do that. |
