New Orleans--Pre-trip

We spent 2 nights in the New Orleans French Quarter, where we met up with Carter and Sam.

We took a ride on one of the steam driven paddleboard boats out of New Orleans.  The trip included dinner and a jazz band.  I expected real southern food, and was a bit disappointed.  The jazz was OK, but where I thought we'd be listening while we ate, we had to walk to the other end of the boat to hear them.  Overall it was an OK adventure.  The boat was nice, and it is always interesting to see land from the water.

We also went out to the Garden District on the street car.  It was great fun to ride the street car.  It goes slowly; stops frequently.  The driver says hello to most of the riders by first name; and asks how their children are doing.  You can buy tickets on-line for about $1 for a full day of riding, less if you're over 60.

We had a tour guide to take us around the old houses, which is great because she pointed out the different architectural elements in the old homes.  And often who the current owners are.
